Over the past 20 years, the Middle Tennessee region has:
~ Created 233,955 new jobs
~ Recruited 601 companies
~ Experienced 60% population growth
Important of Regionalism
~ Middle Tennessee region drives the state’s economy
~ The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce serves as the ‘front door’ for regional economic development efforts
~ Over the past 20 years, most of Middle Tennessee’s job growth has occurred in the suburban counties surrounding Nashville
~ The type and level of economic growth has not been equitable or consistent among suburban counties. Each county has a defined plan
for economic development that focuses on a niche/target industry
~ When contacted by companies seeking to relocate to Middle TN, the Nashville Chamber’s Economic Development staff will determine
a company’s needs and direct them to the appropriate local officials
Who does Middle Tennessee compete against?
1. Austin, TX
2. Charlotte, NC
3. Raleigh-Durham, NC
4. Indianapolis, IN
5. Atlanta, GA
Performance Measured By
~ Population growth
~ Gross Domestic Product
~ Employment
~ Aggregate wages/incomes
~ Adults with a college degree
~ Undergraduate enrollment
~ Number of physicians
~ Number of patents
~ Tax revenue
Nashville’s Strengths
~ Population and employment growth
~ Rising wages and incomes
~ Quality of life
Nashville’s Challenges
~ Performance of Metro Nashville public school system
~ Lack of mass transit options
~ Public safety- high level of violent crime in Davidson County
~ Poverty- especially child poverty
~ Innovation capacity (lack of patents) - somewhat misleading due to difficulties in receiving patents in medical-related fields
Drivers of Prosperity
~ Economic Diversity- not heavily dependent on a particular industry
~ Talent Development
~ Place/livability- quality of life issues
~ Regionalism
Targeted Industries
~ Music/entertainment- most volatile
~ Health care- #1 industry in Middle TN (110,000 direct employees or 25% of total jobs)
~ Advanced manufacturing/robotics- produces large spillover benefits
Other Comments
~ Currently 18 corporate relocations and 28 expansions in pipeline, accounting for almost 9,500 new jobs
~ Media exposure regarding economic development announcements can sometimes scare companies off or kill the deal
~ In the past, most recessions have been cyclical, where policy changes are made to improve the economy. The current economic situation
is a structural recession, where new ideas must be developed to improve economy
~ Advantages of suburban markets over Downtown Nashville – less expensive and availability of parking
~ Davidson County is running out of available space for new construction and must begin to focus on redevelopment of existing sites
~ Key to corporate relocations is building relationships with site selection representatives
~ How does the Partnership 2020 Plan differ from previous economic development plans?
1. More focus on expanding existing businesses than relocations
2. More emphasis on community colleges/2-year degrees
